Checklist: Wedding Invitation Wording

 
 

When putting your wording for the Wedding Invitation together, you should first decide which style of wedding you want to have, e.g. Traditional, Modern, Formal or Informal wedding. Your decision will affect the wording slightly.

Your Invitation will set the mood and indicate to your guests the style of reception you are having.

A Wedding Invitation requires the following information:

  1. Who is hosting?
    Below is a table listing a formal and informal option depending on who is hosting the wedding.

  2. The Invitation or Request
    This line requests the company of your guests.

    Formal
    • Request the honour of your presence at the marriage of ...

    Informal
    • Would be delighted for you to attend the marriage of …
    • Invite you to share in their love and happiness as they exchange their wedding vows and begin their new life together
    • Invite you to share in the love and happiness of the marriage of ..

    • Invite you to celebrate with us as we begin our new life together...;

  3. The Couple
    The bride is generally listed first. The formal approach has the brides first and middle name, and the grooms full name and title. The more modern approach is to list their first and last names.

    Formal:
    • Julie Jane to/and Mr. Ben James Jackson
    • Julie Smith to/and Ben Jackson

    Informal
    • Julie to/and Ben

  4. Ceremony Details
    For well known landmarks, for example The Opera House, you do not need to include the address

  5. Reception
    If you are having a cocktail reception, or not serving a main meal, it is nice to let this be known to your guests.
    Please join us afterwards for a cocktail style reception
    • Our cocktail style reception will be held at

  6. RSVP
    You may wish to include an RSVP date and time on the invitation. However, a pre-addressed and pre-stamped RSVP postcard (with a stamp already on it) will ensure responses are received sooner. Things to include on your separate RSVP card are:
    • RSVP date
    • Date of Wedding
    • Area for the guests to write their names
    • Optional: Dietary requirements
    • Optional: List 2 of your favourite songs

  7. Dress Code
    If you have a particular style that you would like your guests to wear, include this also:
    • Cocktail
    • Semi-formal
    • Black Tie
    • Smart Casual
