Photo Tips:
Taking a Photo of a Group at a Birthday Party

A Group Photo is great for the Thank You Card you send to your guests. But, it is not always easy to take a photo or a group at a Birthday Party, Function or Gathering. One reason is that the opportunity does not present itself on its own and another reason is deciding when the right time is to disrupt everyone. The larger the group the harder it is, as a result is is quite often the photo that does not get taken.

  1. Be Prepared
Know where you will take the photo
Think ahead about how you want people to pose
    Warn them ahead of time

  2. Make sure your batteries are charged and your camera is ready!!

  3. Where to take the photo?
Give the photo context, e.g. In front of the Christmas tree, on a sporting field

  4. Avoid distractions in the background - unless they add meaning to the photo

  5. If the photo is taken inside, make sure the group is not standing in front of a window.
The lighting from the window may destroy the photo and the flash may reflect back (this also happens if there is a glass cabinet behind the group)

  6. Take a few shots, but BE QUICK !!!

  7. Take Control
Tell them how you would like to stand If they can't see you, you can't see them

  8. Once again, BE QUICK!!
People want to get back to their festivities. An impatient group will not make the best photograph

  9. Give them a reason for the photo:
e.g. you only get together once a year, or, this will be great on our Christmas Card

  10. If there are more than one photographers, wait until the others are finished, otherwise everyone will be looking in different directions

  11. Make sure everyone is looking at the camera

  12. When to take the photo?
Most of the time the photo will work best when taken at the beginning of your gathering - People look their best!
If the group is moving to another location, i.e. for drinks, a meal, take advantage of the fact that they are moving around.... this will avoid disruption.

  13. Enjoy IT!
Show that you are having fun SMILE - it will help relax everyone else!

Now that you have some beautiful photos, why not incorporate them into a Thank You Card or the next Greeting Card, Invitation or Christmas Card you send out. We welcome you to browse through our designs. Alternatively, contact us as we can work together to choose the perfect design for you.
